Prayer and bibles open to cover some biblical ground

THE THANG:

1) What is passivity?

The question has haunted men since the beginning – dictionary says “acceptance of what happens without active response or resistance or the state of inactivity or unreactiveness”

Adam started this example in the Garden of Eden – as the serpant is manipulating Gods instruction given to Adam and interacting with Eve (Adam is there, listening and yet doing nothing). Both then eat from the tree of the knowledge of Good and Evil!

Genesis 2:8-9; 2:15-17; & 3:1-6

We discussed:

2) Where do we see passivity in the world today?

3) Why is passivity so hard for men to navigate?

Luke 8:16-18

Parable of the Lamp – Jesus wanted the disciples to know that a lamp lit was not meant to be placed under cover but rather used to light the room. Just as the message and word of God demands it to be shared! Jesus wanted the disciples to know this and then to go and do something with what they had learned! As men we are called to do the same!!

Matthew 25:14-30

Parable of the Talents – the last slave was lazy and wicked and did nothing with what his master had given him. We see a perfect example of passivity and how when you reap nothing, you sow nothing! Like our faith, when we fail to repent or know Christ, we leave on the table salvation for all time!

Luke 10:30-37

The Good Samaritan – even representatives of the church were passive and walked by, doing nothing. Yes it cost the Samaritan money and time however as a reflection of Jesus, he cared for others out of overflow not show without condition or demand of repayment. So good!!

4) What should our response as men be to passivity?

We are to reject passivity! Like Jesus in Matthew 21

Matthew 21:12-13

Jesus flips the table over when the church was turned into a den of robbers trying to turn a prophet. Many of us see this as an example of justified anger…but why? This was Jesus response to a church that did nothing to prevent them from turning a “house of prayer” into a “den of robbers”! He called them to reject passivity! That is what we should do.

5) How do we as men do that?

We covered a lot of biblical ground to address exactly that. As follows:

6 Considerations for Battling Passivity

1) Take Ownership of Your Sin – 1 John 1:8-9

Can you imagine if we never admitted, confessed, or repented?! What a gift it is to repent!

2) Be Present (show up, both physically & mentally)

Hebrews 10:24-25 – “spur one another on toward love and good deeds and do not give up on meeting together as some are in the habit of doing. And all the more as you see the day approaching”! Live each day like Jesus is returning tomorrow.

3) Serve your Spouse & Children – Philippians 2:3-4

We see an instruction about having a servant’s heart and then the passages to follow outline Jesus model of humbling Himself to serve everyone by taking on the form of a man and being obedient to the worst death. Don’t give your family your crumbs or table scraps – give them your first fruits behind God!!

4) Serve the Church – Ephesians 5:25

Jesus loves the church and leaves us careful instruction on to love one another – that’s how they will know we’re His because of our love for others!

5) Be Active & Joyful in Worship – Psalm 66:1, 97:1, & 117:1

Make a joyful noise and shout from the rooftops your love for our Lord and Savior

6) Be Prayerful – 1 Thessalonians 5:17 & Luke 18:1

Pray with out ceasing- Jesus reminds the disciples to pray purposefully and with intention! Make this an active part of your life!

Run toward this fight of Passover instead of sitting on the bench with it!

Let’s get it!!!
