Desire for a King (v.14)

Israel says, “Let us set a king over us like all the nations around us.”

Men are tempted to copy culture instead of standing apart in obedience (place the Bible over you, let God’s Word rule). Self help books might be good but the Good Book is King.

God Chooses the King (v.15)

The king must be the one God chooses, from among their brothers. Not a foreigner.

Align with Christian culture. Let those in your inner circle and tribe be of strong Christian culture and character.

Limits on Power – Horses (v.16)

The king must not multiply horses or send people back to Egypt

Men fall when they chase power and return to old chains for comfort.

We need not tanks, but consistency.

Limits on Pleasure – Wives (v.17a)

The king must not multiply wives, or his heart will turn away.

Men lose focus and integrity when they indulge unchecked appetites.

Limits on Wealth – Silver & Gold (v.17b)

The king must not greatly multiply silver and gold for himself. Perhaps for the Kingdom, but not for himself in excess.

Men’s downfall often comes from greed and self-enrichment. Note the many kings who came after and did not stick to Deut 17 14:20.

Law at the Center (v.18)

The king must write for himself a priesthood-approved, fully endorsed copy of the law and keep it.

True leadership is rooted in fully digested Scripture, not just charisma or strategy. This must happen daily. Feed the flame. Seek daily silent solitude for the Still, Small Voice.

Allow space for God to work. Pursue.

Seek ye first the Kingdom of God. Early. Often.

Daily Devotion (v.19)

The king must read it all the days of his life, so he learns to fear the Lord and obey.

Consistency—not intensity—shapes a man’s strength and humility.

Consistency—not intensity—shapes a man’s strength and humility.

Consistency—not intensity—shapes a man’s strength and humility.

Humility in Leadership (v.20)

The king’s heart must not be lifted above his brothers, and he must not turn aside.

The best leaders stay humble and aligned, leaving a lasting legacy.

Judge not. Humble or be humbled; Find something to like; Find something to love;Find something to learn; Learn something to grow.
