THE THANG:

The story we have read many times – considered in a different way.

Ephesians 4:30-32 – Bring to others what we receive from God – His undeniable sacrifice, mercy, love, etc.

Proverbs 3:5-6 – Your rescuing depends on your full reliance on God and letting everything about you be guided by Jesus with “whole-hearted” devotion.

1) have you ever been given a responsibility to do something that you did everything to get out of? Why do we as men do that?

Jonah was not a good prophet, however we know that God’s mercy knows no bounds for those who believe in Him

Read Jonah chapters 1-4

Up to this point in scripture we read about God’s word spoken through prophets where in Jonah we instead read the story of a prophet.

Lots of opposites in this book. We see:

– a prophet disobedient to God and running from His command to go to Ninavah and proclaim God’s message for them

– Jonah tries to run from God on the ocean that he acknowledges God commands – Jonah has little concern for anyone but himself – sleeping, volunteering to die to get out of Gods plan

– pagan sailors and a captain who acknowledge God

– thrown overboard Jonah tries to escape Gods plan and He sends a fish to provide safe passage back to dry land

– Jonah prays – a sort of repentance, thanking God for reaching him

– Jonah finally goes to Ninavah and utters 5 Hebrew words about being overthrown without mention of God, what Ninavah did wrong or even what the Ninavites needed to do and yet they repent and humble themselves – God then forgives them and doesn’t destroy them!

– Jonah gets mad about Gods mercy because that’s (in his mind) for the Israelites only, pouts and goes up on a hill in the distance, builds a poor shelter, but needs shade

– God provides a plant for shade and also a worm to consume it – because of His sovereignty to serve as a reminder that He is over all things!

– Jonah asks for death and still doesn’t understand the Heart and Love of God!

Each of us has a Jonah inside running from God, disobedient, without grace and mercy when not convenient for us and we are called to turn to God when we really need to!!
