Revelation 3:1-6
Note how this differs from some of the other churches. They do not have issues with idolatry,
temple prostitutes, sexual perversion, or even persecution. In fact, archaeological evidence
shows a large Jewish synagogue 100 yards long. (Roughly the size of a football field)
What they do have: Pride and Complacency
This text helps us 1) Grasp the danger of living on fumes 2) See how we ourselves are tempted
to do that and 3) Commit to fueling our flame
Jesus is introduced…
Seven Spirits (Sevenfold Spirit – Isaiah 11:1-3) – OT imagery to connect Jesus Christ to the one
prophesied
Seven Stars – These are the pastors of the churches
I.E. I hold the power of God, and I hold the church. (I am the daddy, I get to say how things go)
NOTE: He does confirm something – VS 4
God always has a remnant, and be encouraged that it is possible to follow him
The focus on this passage is in the correction, however. While there is one church with a
stronger letter, this is the second most corrective of the 7.
So what is happening? You may say this church has avoided a lot of “the big sins.”
And that MAY be part of the problem.
First, let’s chat about something. Are some sins worse than others? The Scriptures tell us that if
you fail at ANY part of the law, you are guilty of all of it. (James 2:10-11) Now some sins may
have more natural consequences, but it’s usually we humans that rank them better or worse and
compare. It is quite possible, given the absence of some of the other corrections, they became
proud and complacent. What can get proud and complacent about?
1. The past
a. They had the reputation of being alive, but were dead.
i. Do you have a reputation that doesn’t match reality?
1. What are some names that would fit your reputation: Husband,
Dad, Pastor?
2. If people knew the truth, would it stack up to what they think is
true?
