Moleskin: These verses teach us that the heart is the most important aspect of who we are. In our modern thinking, the heart is the seat of the emotions. But in the Biblical sense the heart was so much more. The heart was the combination of the things we think, the things we feel, and the things we choose. Thus, they saw the heart as the core of who we really are.
So we must guard our hearts above all things (Proverbs 4:23) Why? Because it is the well spring of life. All of the issues of life flow out of your heart. If your heart is filled with good things they will spill out into your life. But if your heart is filled with dark and sinful things the opposite will be true.
We guard our hearts because:
-The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure; who can understand it. (Jeremiah 17:9)
But also, because: The Lord “searches the heart and examines the mind to reward a man according to his behavior….according to what his deeds deserve.” (Jeremiah 17:10) We think of the Lord rewarding us according to our deeds…which is true…but we must understand that He examines the state of our heart first. It is the state of our heart that determines whether our actions are pleasing to God. We can serve the Lord, give to the church, and even do ministry but we can still do those things with a sinful and unbelieving heart. If that is the case, those “good” things are unacceptable to the Lord. On the flipside, when our hearts are bent towards the Lord He blesses us, even when we stumble into sin from time to time.
Gentlemen, above all things we must guard our hearts!
