How Do We Discern God’s Will?

Go to God’s Word

2 Timothy 3:16-17 – All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
What is God like? What does God approve of?
We can know what kind of gift or dessert our wife or friend would want because we are close to them and know their personality.
Apply the Scriptures
What car to buy? What job to take? Person to marry? Etc.
What aligns most closely with what God would want? What does scripture say about how to use money? How will the job impact your role as a husband or father?
Consult your wife!…or other wise counsel.
Ask for a renewed mind
Ephesians 4:23 “Be renewed in the spirit of your mind.”
Psalm 51:10 “Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a right spirit within me.”
Remember…
God is Sovereign and you can’t screw up his plans.
Romans 8:28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.
He will be with you…even if you screw up.
“The steps of a man are established by the Lord; and He delights in his way. When he falls, he will not be hurled headlong; because the Lord is the One who holds his hand” (Psalm 37:23-24).
“Nevertheless I am continually with You; You have taken hold of my right hand. With Your counsel You will guide me, and afterward receive me to glory” (Psalm 73:23-24).
Ultimately, God’s will is for you to be more like Jesus.
Romans 8:29 For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.
THE MORE WE KNOW HIM THE MORE WE WILL KNOW HIS WILL.
THE MORE WE WALK IN HIS WILL THE MORE WE WILL KNOW HIM.
